Ever wonder why we are so distracted by everything? What makes us get off track so often? Why do we consistently have demanding crises that always come up? Daniel Goleman shows us how this happens in his book, Focus.
Throughout Focus, Goleman advocates that we lose track of what we are doing because we have not set up an environment that forces us to succeed. Humans only have so much willpower, and if you are trying to quit sugar while having your pantry stacked with cupcakes, this will not work out very well. While it is about being able to say ‘no,’ we also need to know how to eliminate distracting objects that are holding us back and replace them with new, uplifting habits.
We must learn to focus our lives on a limited number of goals at a time. As the saying goes, “one who chases two rabbits catches none.” Learning to do one thing at a time helps us get shit done much quicker than doing multiple things at once, and potentially screwing all of them up. On top of that, it greatly reduces stress in our lives for things that give us no benefit. It is a win-win situation.
Daniel Goleman provides very helpful advice throughout Focus. It will make you realize that our subconscious mind is more controlled by the environment we put ourselves into. It is possible to control our focus and attention through willpower, but it is much harder to do it that way. I would personally rather set myself up to succeed and provide the environment I need to work in order to get things done. This is how many of the top achievers in the world get places. Made in America was written by Walton at the end of his life. He used this as an opportunity to share his wisdom and what he learned throughout life with others. One of the biggest points he makes throughout this book is to never act like you are a big company, and to work with our employees to show them that we are on their side.
He also makes the point of ensuring that employees are happy-even more so than the customers. The reason he says this is because if your employees are happy, that means happy customers. It is similar to a chain reaction. Happy employees=happy customers=happy bank and investment accounts for the company.
Made in America by Sam Walton is a wonderful resource for anyone who is an aspiring entrepreneur who wants to learn more about the world of business or is interested in a funny biography that will lead to self-improvement.
