Book Review-Who Moved My Cheese? By Spencer Johnson, M.D.

Who Moved My Cheese? is a very thoughtful and hysterical read at the same time. This was one of those books where I found myself laughing hysterically every couple of pages, but also having to pause think about what this story actually means. This is the story of 4 mice and how they handle having their cheese moved. In actuality, Johnson uses this story as a metaphor on how people deal with change and how it determines the success of our overall life.

The story is about two tiny humans, Hem and Haw, and two mice, named Sniff and Scurry, who live in a maze that have just lost their old, traditional cheese. Sniff and Scurry are the ones who are able to sense when change is near, and they prepare for it ahead of time. However, Hem and Haw have a harder time adapting to change, and fall behind. They wake up one day to find their cheese not there. Sniff and Scurry already started down the path for new cheese as they sensed it becoming moldy, while Hem and Haw complain since its not in the normal location. Haw decides to eventually take off without a complaining Hem, and goes on a journey to find fresh, new cheese!

Haw ends up discovering the new cheese was even better than the old! The cheese symbolizes how to overcome fear of change to strive for something better. Whether its a new job, new car, new city to live in, or a new business, this story signals the possibility of having a greener grass on the other side of our comfort zones. I personally was really enlighted by the story of Who Moved My Cheese?, because old doors that become closed off may lead to new doors being open that direct us down a better path in life. This is a very simple book to understand, and I feel anyone would benefit from this story. Happy reading!
