Book Review-The One Thing by Gary Keller

The One Thing by Gary Keller is an extremely helpful book on productivity and stress management. Keller advocates for us to focus on limited things at a time, so we can direct more attention to them. I felt very enlightened when reading this book, since we are always taught to multi-task as much as possible growing up. However, it turns out that the top producers do not operate this way. They direct more attention on a smaller amount of tasks, eventually narrowing their most important “ONE Thing” to the most important activity.

Many times, flurries of activity are mixed with productivity. This has actually been proven to not be the case. Doing more of one thing has been proven to produce the best results. Think about it: if we multi-tasked all the time, would we be able to do things well? No, because the more focus we have at ONE Thing that is important, we would achieve much better results. Not only that, it also makes our lives simpler and much less stressful. We would not be changing gears as often, because task switching has been proven to take a toll on our productivity. This is due to having to switch our minds to another task, taking up brain power and willpower. Keller in The One Thing asserts that it is best to ask ourselves what is most important, and give much less focus to everything else other than the important scenario.

The One Thing really helped me realize what is most important in my life. I realized that by focusing on one thing at a time, and minimizing distractions, this really helps me distinguish the other non-important things out there. In turn, this frees up much more of my time to do things I enjoy! I really feel this book will help anyone who has many demands on their plate, but has a hard time getting anything done. Happy reading!
