Book Review-The Life and Times of Babe Ruth by Leigh Montville

I recently read The Life and Times of Babe Ruth, and thought it was a very interesting story on the greatest baseball player of all time. I feel this book taught me a lot about what someone will do when thrown out into the world as a young man after being sheltered all throughout childhood. This book details his childhood as an orphan, all the way to his experience before his death from cancer in 1948.

Ruth never had a secure life as a child or even as a young adult. His baseball success had made up for it, though. He was admired by those who were not his teammates and coaches. Ruth was larger than life to the public. However, those who dealt with him detailed how difficult he was to live and play with. He was considered a rebellious child who was always in trouble with the nuns at St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys. He would drink heavily and consume multiple hot dogs before every game. Ruth would always have mistresses in his hotel room, and show up late to practice each day. He was the kind of person who did what he wanted. However, Ruth also had a soft spot for children. There was a side of him that was very giving and generous. The Life and Times of Babe Ruth details the many facets of his personality. There is still much ‘fog’ over his early childhood. Why did he end up there? No one may ever know.

The Life and Times of Babe Ruth was a very entertaining read and would recommend to anyone who is interested in baseball history or loves to be entertained by great stories. Ruth was a legend who people really did not know much about behind the scenes. He was known to have a bit of a temper, and getting on his bad side was a dangerous place to be. However, he was very naive and had to learn later in life about street smarts. If you buy this book, I promise you will be very entertained. Thanks for reading!
